Grammaticalization is a process of language change by which grammatical markers are created from nouns and verbs. It creates new function words by a process deriving them from content words, instead of extracting them from existing bound, inflectional constructions. During grammaticalization, a lexical word or group of words loses some or all of its meaning and begins to fulfil a more grammatical function. An understanding of the process of grammaticalization requires distinguishing between lexical items or content words, and grammatical items or function words.
