Description

Grammaticalization is a process of language change by which grammatical markers are created from nouns and verbs. It creates new function words by a process deriving them from content words, instead of extracting them from existing bound, inflectional constructions. During grammaticalization, a lexical word or group of words loses some or all of its meaning and begins to fulfil a more grammatical function. An understanding of the process of grammaticalization requires distinguishing between lexical items or content words, and grammatical items or function words. Where grammaticalization occurs, nouns and verbs that carry some lexical meaning develop over time into grammatical items. This book presents the complex subject of grammaticalization in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. It is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of grammaticalization. This book is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.
